Guido Vermeulen's mail art envelopes are like worlds into themselves and at the same time they are part of the much larger whole.

(a comment by NANCY BELL SCOTT, USA, on the IUOMA network)

Guido's paintings are like finding images in the clouds
(a comment by Kathleen D. Johnson, USA, on IUOMA)

Guido does not paint monsters but spirits and ghosts, full of love, tenderness and compassion
(LIZA LEYLA during a conversation, Belgium)

His ability to express emotions through painting is a beautiful gift. Allowing oneself to feel sadness is the most direct route through grief. His paintings feel peaceful and kind.

(STEPHEN WALKER, USA)

My life is shifting... Your work is intangible, ethereal, cosmically rewarding. i eat it up & savor it like a great sandwich! It made my day!
(Lisa PEREZ, USA, on IUOMA)

Thank you for the TALISMAN painting on the envelope. It is real cool and creepy at the same time. I haven’t seen a piece of abstract capture such as pain and emotion so well since I visited the museum of art in Toledo. Bravo!
(Sarah Jo Pender, USA, from the Indiana Women’s Prison)

I suppose you could characterize Guido's painting style as expressionist. I know he is very interested in dreams as a source for art and poetry, and these particular chapter pages seem like shadowy dream corridors filled with shifting images and scenes. The Michaux quotes work as a counterpoint, Guido's art is taking over when the limits of language have been reached.
(De Villo Sloan, USA, on my tribute pages to Henri Michaux, see LAMUSAR blog)

Guido’s art expressions are always poems and they show us the reality of our real faces and souls (Mariana Serban, Romania)

His titles have both inspired and educated me (Alicia Starr, USA)

SECRET EXCHANGES FROM 1875 TO 2011

Collage A4, will travel also to Australia. Why 1875? Because the graphical images I used and put together comes from the magazine "European Illustrations" edition of 1875. Amazing: what are the main topics in that zine? War, murder, dead, natural disasters annd some trivia, our news in 2011 is an echo of 1875. Nothing had changed or has it? The huge canon was not an imaginary one but the latest technology (in 1875) of the Krupp factories in Germany, yeah, the same bastards that supported Hitler and the concern was never dismantled after WW II. Oh boy, I'm going to amuse me more with this type of graphical material, I can assure you!

I'M IN LOVE WITH A COBRA

Intervention on a large mail art envelope with an empty space for remarks, for the "Secrets exchange" project. This envelope will tarvel to a contemporary art museum in Australia.

Collage A4 with graphic material from French magazines from around 1890.
Mailed to Thierry Tillier in Belgium for his project on culture and industrialization, Charleroi 1911-2011.
Small funny detail: the image is not of the stock exchange market in Charleroi but that from Antwerp (only Belgians will understand the irony of the situation..)

26 April 1986 - 26 April 2011: 25 years of zombies in Tchernobyl

Intervention on a large mail art envelope, for the project "the living dead" proposed by "I'm a superhero" in the USA. Because we started an email exchange on IUOMA on April 26 and this is the tragic anniversary of the nuclear disaster I thought it was apt to link zombies to that "event".
For those who are still in doubt: Fukushima is worse than Tchernobyl !!!

ANN, I'M LIVING IN THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE

Ann continues to inspire me, even in darkness (hihi).

Large painted envelope for the "Blackbird project" mailed to David Stone in the USA.

THE REBELLION OF CHARLES OF FLANDERS, PRINCE-REGENT OF BELGIUM

Large painted envelope for Anke van den Berg's project on "the king". This painting is linked with what we call "fatherland history" (hihi).
Okay, for the lazy ones amongst you. Leopold III, 4th king of Belgium, did not follow the government in exile in England during world war 2. After the war this was seen as treason by a part of the political establishment and the population. A rebellious general strike broke out against the return of the king and this could have meant the end of the monarchy. In the meantime Charles became the prince-regent. Charles was the rebel of the family and also a gifted artist. The monarchy saved its skin by the abdication of Leopold III in favour of his young son Baudhuin I.
The royal family never forgave Charles and he became a persona non grata in his own circles. This is my personal salute to "Karel van Vlaanderen"!

Small painted envelope, because Cheryl Penn said on IUOMA she liked this so much I reserved this for her but incorporated it into a larger work, added some additional remarks on "do you dream in Ochre"? Yes, I know, I have a huge debt to pay to Pierre Alechinsky but if you take a model, I always thought why limit yourself and choose the best model possible! Merci Pierre and all the post Cobra artists continuing to work in the same spirit, with the same energy. I have no problem recognizing I'm part of that movement...

AAN TAFEL! KOMEN ETEN! DINNER IS SERVED!

A painting I made with ink & coffee & watercolours, woodglue mixed with white pepper powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, cinamon powder, some white sesame seeds and some black mustard seeds. So the painting has a lot of texture and smells deliciously.
